The history of the table mat - well my table mats!!!!!

In the thirty six years we have been married Mr angel and I have had four sets of placemats!!

Our first ones were these!!! They were a wedding present, and I loved them!!!

We had them for years!

Then they started to wear out: in fact they were worn out, but I found it difficult to get rid of them!!

I decided that they just had to go, so I retired them, well gave them a funeral really - into the bin!!

I thought it would be a good idea to buy some clear glass ones!!

Easy to keep clean, went with everything as they were clear glass!

They were fine at first, then they started to chip, and got little sharp edges, and the little buffer pads on the bottom stuck to the mat underneath, pulling them off and making it difficult to get them out of the drawer!!!

After several battles, they went in the bin!!!

Then I found these, and again we've had them for years!!!

But lately they have started to wear out and the coating is coming loose!!

They followed the glass ones to the bin!!!

But, only after I found these in BHS in the sale, and thought that they would suit us!!

What do you think??

Kindest wishes and love

Do you know I had some kitchen items that matched your first placemats - I had some biscuit tins as well. I've also had the glass variety with similar problems!
Your new ones look lovely!

Very pretty but I like washable, padded cloth ones myself. A huge hedgehog fan, a friend even managed to find some mats with the prickly critters on them - needless to say, I haven't used them. I also had some glass ones and found them really difficult to keep clean. No matter how many times I washed them they always seemed to have greasy finger prints on them. Then of course, as you say, theres the chipping.

Like the new ones. I went to see the original "vintage" ones, they were cute, too.
I have had dozens of mats over the years, it's such an easy inexpensive way to add a new touch to the table.

Quite lovely...and I hope you and Mr. Angel will have many happy moments with them before they follow the others into the bin ;-)
So happy to see you DID get my invitation to come to my dream party. It wouldn't have been the same without you. As I told my other visitors...I have been away for a bit and was sure that I had been forgotten. But blogland is a wonderful place and within a short time 7 gals came skipping over to my party. Thank you for making my day special. Hope yours will be special too ;-)

It's 'My Life as seen through My Table Mats!' - wonderful! I really like your new ones. We have some late 80s which we bought when we got married in 1990 and I have to say they were a good choice - hardly dated. We don't use them all that much, though - do you use them every day?

Very nice. Meal time is important so it's nice that you have some lovely table mats to enjoy your food from.

Good Morning Sweetie...
What a beautiful share. I so love your placemats, old and recent. I love the roses with the polka dots, as they are just precious. I thank you for sharing with me today.

I too have lots of place mats. Mainly cloth so that I can wash them, I have 4 grandsons and 2 sons and a husband, and they are all quite messy. There is always a little mess around where each of them has sat at the table or the bar area. I always know when one has been there.

Have a beautiful day sweetie. Country hugs and much love...Sherry

Pretty mats, I like them. My table mat story is very similar to yours. We had a great set for a wedding present, then glass ones that also chipped, we are on little bird ones now.
